Horizon (2023)

[Horizon] where the land and sea meet the sky – a boundary that knows no bounds, a way of marking limitations that nonetheless continue to expand endlessly, seemingly limitless.

What started as a midsummer exploration of our coastal horizons has since shifted and left me pondering the concept of the word horizon itself, and how it relates to our own experiences and surroundings. This series is a visual response to the sea, as well as a reflection of the emotions it harbours. A tribute to a life lived by the ocean, an opportunity to dive deeper into our coastal surroundings with the intent of capturing the essence of our maritime lifestyle through various mediums.

This collection is multifaceted. A considerable portion of time was dedicated to creative explorations, tests, and research. I ventured along the shores, documenting the horizons while collecting found objects that resonate with the project’s conceptual intent. A small sketchbook became a vessel for gestural drawings and journal entries, encapsulating my thoughts and reflections along the way.

The finished result presents a series of wall hangings that embody our horizon, crafted from stoneware clay and mixed media. In limiting the colour palette, I aimed to unify the various components harmoniously, allowing each piece to echo the beauty and complexity of the coastal landscape. This project captures not only the visual essence of the horizon but also the emotions and experiences that arise from a life lived by the sea.
